Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Florida motorcycle license endorsements, gear requirements, rescheduling fees, and what to expect during your BRC training.

To get a motorcycle license in Florida, you must complete an approved motorcycle safety course such as the Basic Rider Course (BRC). Once you successfully complete the course, you will receive your BRC endorsement card (completion certificate), which allows you to add your motorcycle endorsement to your driver's license without taking any additional DMV riding or written tests. You simply visit the DMV after 48 hours, pay a small license fee, and have the endorsement added to your license.
No. If you complete a state-approved motorcycle safety course like the Basic RiderCourse (BRC), you do NOT need to take any additional written or riding tests at the DMV. Our MSF and Florida Rider Training Program (FRTP) approved classes include both the knowledge and riding evaluations required by the state. Once you pass, your completion is submitted to the state system, enabling you to skip the DMV testing entirely.
No. You do NOT need a motorcycle permit to take the Basic Rider Course (BRC) in Florida. You can enroll directly in a state-approved motorcycle training course like the MSF Basic Rider Course offered by State Motorcycle Training.
You can get your motorcycle license in as little as one weekend. The Basic Rider Course (BRC) includes 2 days of in-person training (about 5 hours each day) plus a 5-hour online eCourse, for a total of approximately 15 hours of instruction. Once you pass, your completion is submitted to the state, and you can visit the DMV after 48 hours to print your new license.
You must be at least 15 and a half years old to take the Basic Rider Course (BRC) in Florida. If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian must be present to sign the required waiver forms before participating in the class.
Yes. You must have a valid standard driver’s license or learner’s permit to take the Basic Rider Course (BRC). The course teaches motorcycle operation, but you must already be legally able to operate a standard motor vehicle.
No. You do not receive a license directly from the BRC. After successfully completing the course, you will receive your BRC endorsement card, and your completion is submitted to the state database. After 48 hours, you must visit any Florida DMV office, pay a small fee, and have the motorcycle endorsement officially printed onto your driver's license before legally riding on public roads.
The BRC card you receive after completing the course is the only original copy issued, and it is the student's responsibility to keep it safe. We are not able to issue a replacement card. If the card is lost before you add the endorsement to your license, you will have to retake the class to receive another BRC card. We strongly recommend laminating your card and storing it in a safe place!
Yes, you are required to complete the 5-hour online eCourse before finishing your in-person motorcycle training. After you register, you will receive an email with access to the course. You must complete the eCourse before the end of the second day of class and bring your printed eCourse completion certificate with the certificate number to the range.
Yes. At State Motorcycle Training, we provide the motorcycle, helmet, gloves, and eye protection for all students. Our classes are designed so beginners can learn without needing their own motorcycle or gear. You are welcome to bring your own DOT-approved helmet, gloves, and glasses if you prefer.
You must wear over-the-ankle footwear for the riding portion of the course. This means boots or sturdy shoes that fully cover and protect your ankle bones. Low-cut shoes, thin sneakers, canvas shoes, sandals, or open-toe footwear are strictly prohibited. Arriving without proper footwear will result in dismissal from the range and a standard $150 rescheduling fee.
If you do not bring the required items or wear proper riding attire, you will not be allowed to participate in the class. You must wear a long-sleeve shirt or jacket, long non-flare pants (denim with no rips or holes), over-the-ankle sturdy boots, and bring your printed eCourse certificate and valid driver's license/permit. Dismissal for improper gear requires a $150 rescheduling fee.
Yes! Our course is specifically designed for beginners with zero prior riding experience. Most students in our classes have never been on a motorcycle before. We start from the absolute basics (identifying controls, mounting, clutch friction zone) and guide you step-by-step in a safe, closed-course environment.
You must arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled class start time. If you arrive late, you will not be allowed to participate, as range exercises start strictly on time and cannot be restarted or delayed for safety. Missing class due to lateness requires a $150 rescheduling fee to re-enroll in a future date.
All motorcycle class registrations are final. Refunds are only issued if you cancel at least 72 hours before your scheduled class start date. Rescheduling is allowed one time at no cost if requested at least 72 hours in advance. If you request to reschedule within 72 hours of your class, a $150 rescheduling fee will apply. No-call / no-shows require a $150 rescheduling fee and are limited to a one-time rebooking allowance.
Yes, motorcycle classes are held rain or shine. Classes will continue as scheduled even in rainy conditions. Students may bring full rain gear to stay dry and comfortable during training. Training in different weather conditions is part of becoming a safe and prepared rider!
