How to Get Your Motorcycle License in Florida (2026 Guide)

March 29, 2026 By Rafhat Farooque 6 min read

So you've decided to ride. Maybe you finally bought that bike you've been eyeing for years, or maybe you just want the freedom of two wheels on a Sunday morning — either way, getting your Florida motorcycle license is actually a lot more straightforward than most people expect. I've seen hundreds of students walk onto our range nervous as anything and leave two days later with their endorsement in hand. Here's exactly how the process works.

First, Understand What Florida Actually Requires

Florida doesn't let you just show up to a DMV and take a riding test anymore. Since 2008, the state has required all new motorcycle riders to complete an approved Basic Rider Course (BRC) before they can get their motorcycle endorsement. This isn't just a formality — it's genuinely useful training, and passing it means you skip the DMV riding exam entirely.

The course is built on curriculum from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and is overseen by Florida's Rider Training Program (FRTP). Any school that's FRTP-contracted and MSF-certified — like State Motorcycle Training — is authorized to issue your completion certificate, which you bring straight to the DMV.

Step 1: Make Sure You Have a Valid Driver's License

Before you can take the riding course, you'll need a valid Florida driver's license or learner's permit.

Out-of-state students are welcome at all four of our locations — Tampa, Riverview, St. Petersburg, and Orlando. You can absolutely take the BRC with us regardless of where you're licensed, but reciprocity rules vary by state, so confirm with your home state's DMV how the certificate transfers.

Step 2: Enroll in the BRC at State Motorcycle Training

This is the main event. The BRC is a 15-hour program split over two consecutive days. Registration covers both days and includes:

  • Approx. 5 hours of home eCourse training
  • 10 hours of hands-on range instruction (shifting, swerving, U-turns, emergency brakes)
  • Use of lightweight 250cc training motorcycles and helmets

Step 3: Visit the DMV and Get Your Endorsement

After waiting 48 hours from your course completion date (for state processing), head to any Florida DHSMV office with:

  • Your standard Florida driver's license
  • Your BRC completion card
  • Payment for the DMV endorsement printing fee

They will print your brand new license with the 'M' motorcycle endorsement added directly — with no further written or riding tests at the DMV!
